The Melbourne Trailer & Caravan Supplies Story

More than 35 years ago, Mr Tom Henry realised the need in the light trailer industry for the supply of quality hubs and stub axles.

It was during 1968 that M.T.C.S first opened our one-man business in a single fronted shop of about 30 sqm in North Road, East Bentleigh, opposite what used to be Oakleigh Technical School. Customers during those early years would not be aware that at the back of that sales counter was a pegboard partition behind which was a miniature warehouse, workbench and repair centre.

As business developed, M.T.C.S found that we needed a small factory in which to do our welding, warehousing and repair work. In 1973 we occupied a small premise of 110 sqm in Herald Street, Cheltenham, and from there had subsequent moves to even bigger factories in Viking Court Cheltenham and Alex Avenue Moorabbin whilst still operating the "Head Office" shop in East Bentleigh.

It was in 1982 that M.T.C.S decided to have our office, factory and warehouse all under one roof again – and moved to the premises at 155 Keys Road, Moorabbin where we blossomed into a company supplying to every state of Australia and even some companies in New Zealand.

After spending over 12 years at this site and finding the need to utilise other nearby factories as mini warehouses, we again found the need to move to 333 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham occupying 3000 sqm and employing a staff of 32.

The workshop was generally regarded as one of the most efficient in Australia involved in the light trailer and caravan industry with seven C.N.C lathes capable of machining axles, hubs and brake drums to the finest tolerances.

During our 6 ½ year stay at Warrigal Road we improved our machine shop by purchasing 2 additional C.N.C lathes, a machining centre for drilling hubs and established a tool room for special jobs and our own machine maintenance.

Our staff numbers remained fairly constant and we commenced an apprenticeship scheme, which presently shows 4 graduates & 1 fourth year apprentice in the areas of Fitting and Turning.

Again, we outgrew our premises in Cheltenham and in October 2000 relocated to 1-3 Ashley Park Drive, Chelsea Heights in a building of 4500 sqm consisting of offices, machine shop, showroom and warehouse.

M.T.C.S is a fully owned family business with Tom Henry as founder being joined by his sons Denis in 1971 (General Manager), Wayne in 1985 (Office Manager) and his grandchildren Kirsty in 1992 (Administration Team Leader) and Craig in 1996 (Purchasing Officer). The outstanding reputation of the business is a result of years of reliable service both to the public and the industry as a whole and we plan to continue this for many years to come.

M.T.C.S has been appointed as Australian distributors for the Dexter Axle Company in America and in addition to our own "Knee Suspension", we are now handling the American "Torflex" independent rubber suspension axle. We are also Australian distributors for Brakes India Company in India and Victorian distributors for Rogers Brothers (Queensland) who cater for full airbraking axles and suspensions ranging from 2 tonne up to 12 tonne capacities.

For the caravanner, M.T.C.S offers a wide range of accessories including awnings, hatches, refrigerators, rotating vents etc. For the trailer builder or repairer we offer expert advice on your individual requirements and a large range of parts and accessories with axles made to order on-site.
